Le verre blanc des vitres se fait avec 60 parties de sable, 30 de potasse, 15 de nitre, 2 à 2 1/2 de borax ou d'arsenic.</p> <p>On croit que le verre a été découvert par les Égyptiens. Les Phéniciens l'ont aussi connu très anciennement, et l'on raconte qu'ils l'obtinrent, pour la première fois, en faisant sur le sable un feu violent dans un foyer entouré de blocs de sel de nitre, substance que l'on trouve naturellement sur le bord de la mer, en <placeName>Égypte</placeName>. </p> <p>Le verre a pour <term>propriétés</term> principales sa transparence et sa dureté ; il raye presque tous los corps, et l'on peut dire qu'il est inaltérable à l'air dans les circonstances ordinaires.</p> <p>Il serte à clore les fenêtres, les châssis, les serres, et l'on en confectionne encore ces belles glaces qui ornent nos appartements, ainsi que nombre de vases : bouteilles, fioles, coupes, verres, cloches, enfin des tuyaux et des lentilles pour lunettes, etc. On l'applique devant les gravures pour les préserver des effets du contact de l'air.</p> <p>(1) <term>Oxyde de plomb</term>, corps gris noirâtre qui se forme à la surface du plomb exposé à l'air. Ils font le plus bel ornement des édifices religieux, et l'on commence à les adopter dans les appartements. Les plus anciens vitraux sont ceux de la <placeName>cathédrale de Saint-Denis</placeName>, qui remontent à 1140 ; les rosaces de <placeName>Notre-Dame de Paris</placeName> datent du troisième siècle, ainsi que les admirables vitraux de la <placeName>Sainte-Chapelle</placeName>.</p> <p>Pour <term>fabriquer le verre</term>, on réduit les matières premières en poudre et on les soumet à un feu violent dans des creusets rangés à l'intérieur de grands fours. Bientôt le mélange fond et se transforme en une substance pâteuse qui, étendue sur de grandes tables de métal, donne les vitres ou les glaces.</p> <p><term>Le poli</term> des glaces s'obtient en les appliquant deux à deux l'une sur l'autre, et en imprimant un mouvement de va-et-vient à celle qui occupe la position supérieure ; puis on applique sur l'autre face un amalgame de mercure et d'étain qu'on nomme le <term>tain</term>.</p> <p>Quant aux <term>bouteilles</term>, l'ouvrier cueille la pâte dans le creuset au moyen d'un long tube creux, et l'égalise en le tournant sur une plaque de métal. Un second ouvrier lui donne une forme allongée par un mouvement circulaire rapide ; enfin un troisième souffle dans le tuyau. Sa matière se gonfle et, introduite dans un moule, y prend la forme et les dimensions requises.
